How do I upload or download a GEDCOM file from Ancestry?

When uploading or downloading family trees, Ancestry uses GEDCOM files. GEDCOM stands for Genealogical Data Communications, a universally accepted file format for family tree files. This format allows different family unit tree software applications to sympathise and open the same family tree file, bypassing the differences in coding that would normally prevent sharing. Genealogists using a Mac tin even share their GEDCOMS with PC users.

Note: GEDCOM files are text-only. Any pictures, charts, books, views, or like items establish in the original file will not exist included in the GEDCOM. Vital information, notes, and sources are usually retained afterwards conversion.

Uploading a GEDCOM file to Ancestry

Note: GEDCOM files uploaded to Ancestry have a maximum file size of 75MB

  1. Click on the TREES tab, located in the master navigation bar at the top of the folio and select Create & Manage Copse from the drop-down listing.
  2. Click on the Upload a GEDCOM file link located in the bottom section of the page.
  3. On the Upload a Family unit Tree page, click the gray Choose File button.
  4. This will open a window from which yous can select the GEDCOM file that you would similar to upload. Afterward you locate the file, select it and click the Open push button.
  5. Past default, all copse are listed equally public copse. This allows all members to run across the deceased individuals in your tree, while hiding the total name of living people. If y'all would similar to privatize your tree, uncheck the Permit others to run across my tree as a public member tree box.
  6. If you would like to enter a description of your tree, click the Description field and input your information. This is optional, you are not required to provide a clarification to complete the upload process.

Downloading a GEDCOM file from Ancestry

  1. Click the TREES tab, located in the main navigation bar at the top of the page and select the tree you would like to download from the drop-down carte.

  3. On the right side of the page, within the Manage your tree department, click the EXPORT TREE button.

Troubleshooting Download Issues

If the File Download window does not appear and your reckoner automatically downloads a text file:

  1. Correct click with your mouse (on a Mac Control+ click simultaneously) on the DOWNLOAD YOUR GEDCOM FILE button and select Salvage target as... from the drop-down menu.
    Note: If you are using Firefox or Google Chrome, select Save Link as... from the drib-downwardly listing. If yous are using Safari, select Download linked file as.
